How To Protect Yourself from AI Scams
Artificial intelligence is changing the world – but not always for the better. Scammers are now using AI to impersonate people, create fake messages, and even mimic voices to trick you into giving away money or personal information. These scams are becoming more sophisticated, and relaying on traditional “proofs” like a familiar voice is no longer safe.
Quick stats: These AI voice-cloning scams work so well that a recent McAfee survey finds 77% of victims ended up on the financial hook, with nearly one-third losing more than $1,000.
How AI Scams Work
AI scams can take many forms, but the common goal is always the same: to manipulate you into acting quickly, often without thinking.
- AI Voice Impersonation – scammers can now use AI to imitate a friend, family member, or even a boss. These voice clones are realistic enough to convince people to transfer money, click on an unsafe link, or share sensitive information.
- AI-Generated Communications (Text/Email) – AI can create messages that sound completely legitimate, mimicking the tone and style of someone you know or a trusted organization. These messages often ask for urgent action, like confirming an account, making a payment, or clicking a link.
- Deepfake Video Scams – some scams now involve AI-generated videos showing a trusted person asking for help or making urgent requests. Even seeing someone “live” on a video call isn’t always proof – AI can simulate real-time gestures and speech.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Unexpected requests for money, passwords, or personal info
- Messages or calls creating a false sense of urgency
- Requests to use unusual payment methods (gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers)
- Slightly “off” phrasing, voice tone, or timing that feels unnatural
- Messages from trusted people that don’t match their normal communication habits
- Grammar errors
Tips to Protect Yourself
- Verify Independently – if someone asks for money or sensitive info, contact them directly through a known & trusted method. Don’t rely solely on the voice, video, or message – it could be AI-generated. Call the family member, friend or company directly from a number you know or google search the company and find their phone number on their website.
- Slow Down & Think – scammers can use urgency to put you at risk of making sensitive decisions quickly. Don’t rush! Take the time to think through the request and consider whether the call, text or email is real.
- Be Cautious of Links – never click on links in text messages, unless you’re certain of the source.
- Protect Your Accounts – use strong, unique passwords, enroll in push notifications, enable two-factor authentication, and ensure your financial institution has your up-to-date contact information.
